Confident Teacher of the Month
Congratulations to Marlys Strube!
Reading Recovery and Gifted Teacher
Galena Primary School, Galena, Illinois
Here is what one of her students' parents had to say about her:
"Mrs. Strube serves as both the Reading Recovery and the gifted teacher at GPS. She does so with very little budget, but still manages to put together outstanding programs and projects for the students. My son is in her gifted reading and math classes, and has blossomed under her guidance. She has the students engaged, interested, and thrilled about learning. She recently had the 3rd and 4th graders create data scavenger hunts for their classmates to solve. It was a great way to involve all the students in a GATE project. She's really deserving of this award!"
We asked Marlys why she decided to become a teacher and she responded,
"Ever since I was a little girl, I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher.
My parents tell me that I tried to play school with my younger brother and neighborhood children. I loved school and learning new things!
As a student, I was often paired with a struggling classmate in order to help him or her study for tests and complete projects.
I found great joy in helping my struggling partners learn new material and receive good grades on their tests.
Today, as a teacher, I continue to find joy in seeing what my students accomplish! One of the greatest things about teaching is watching a student use something you have taught them and taking it to a new level. Being a teacher is immensely rewarding and I can't picture myself doing anything else!"
For her prize, Marlys has decided on 5 sets of guided reading titles
for her first and second grade students.
